From correspondents in Mexico City
September 01, 2008 05:47am
MEXICO'S president fractured his shoulder in a bicycle accident but can still work, his office said today, as Felipe Calderon met with the leaders of nationwide protests against surging violent crime.
"During his morning exercise yesterday (Saturday), the president had a bicycle accident caused by humid and slippery conditions," his office said.
Mr Calderon needs six to eight weeks to recover but can still carry out official duties, it said.
Organisers of Mexican marches against escalating crime and impunity took their demands to Mr Calderon today, a day after tens of thousands carried candles in silent protests across Mexico.
Violence has spiked since Mr Calderon, who took office at the end of 2006, launched a crackdown on drug trafficking and related attacks, including the deployment of more than 36,000 soldiers across the country.
