$32 million worth of ice seized in shipment of rubber gloves from China

THREE men are facing charges over more than 80kg of methylamphetamine, known as ice, found in a shipment of rubber gloves from China. Two Adelaide men, aged 34 and 37, along with the Singapore national, 49, are due to face Adelaide Magistrates Court today over the seizure.

The drug shipment had an estimated worth of $32 million.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and South Australia Police monitored the consignment of drugs from Sydney and carried out search warrants yesterday after the three accused allegedly accessed the consignment.

Customs detected the drugs in aluminium foil packages in 40 cartons of rubber gloves that arrived in a shipment of plastic household items and eskies from China on November 8.

AFP Adelaide manager, Detective Superintendent Sharon McTavish, said this was the single largest seizure of methylamphetamine in South Australia and represented a major disruption in the trafficking of illicit drugs into Australia.

The men were charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
