SURREY (NEWS1130) - Just because you don't see them, doesn't mean they're not there. Plainclothes Transit Police officers are working to cut down drug crime and going after known offenders in the Lower Mainland.
Sergeant Tom Seaman says the unit has been operating for about a year across Metro Vancouver. "The first thing that our team focused on was some of the drug dealing in and around the Surrey Central area, and worked very closely with [the] Surrey RCMP drug unit. Our drug arrests almost doubled in a year, simply because of the unit and the work they were doing."
Seaman also says those officers are often called in when stalkers or sex offenders are identified near transit stations. He adds it's possible the undercover service could expand, especially in the lead up to the Olympics and as the Canada Line begins operating.
