To stop violence, drug dealing and other crimes in Harrisburg, Steve Holmes said the community must take a close look at itself in the mirror and not be afraid to get involved.
Holmes, a street preacher who regularly engages residents at 13th and Market streets, said the reaction of drug dealers when he begins work might surprise most people.
"While I'm preaching, they stop. When I'm done, I thank them," Holmes said. "Imagine what the streets would be like if my efforts were duplicated tenfold?"
Holmes was among about 100 people who attended Wednesday night's community wide meeting at the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg to address crime in the city.
Holmes said churches must take a more active role in the community. "There is a big hole in Harrisburg when it comes to professing the word of the Lord," he said.
Four of the six categories of violent crime -- homicide, robbery, burglary and arson -- are on pace this year to exceed the number of reported offenses in Harrisburg in 2006, according to state police crime figures.
Les Ford, a community activist, and others who helped organize the event, said the goal was to develop a broad approach to combating crime in the city, not just one single method.
"Our problem appears to be acute," Ford said.
There were no shortages of suggestions from the audience.
Steve Carter, a Harrisburg native and member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic boxing team, said adults must take a more active role in inspiring children to greatness and away from drugs and crime.
"Adults are not leading from the top down," Carter said. "That's why kids are getting into trouble."
Keith Ford said suggesting solutions is only part of what must be done. Adults should get active in the streets and mentor children or volunteer at community centers, he said.
"There is no point of us complaining if we are afraid to interact with the people on the streets," he said.
Deb Musselman, a resident and employee of the Pennsylvania Newspapers Association, said residents must demand city police provide the community with incident reports so neighborhoods are better informed.
Les Ford said Wednesday's meeting is just the first and others would follow. He added he was pleased with the turnout, but cautioned that results could take several years to achieve.
"We had to get additional chairs for everyone," Ford said of the meeting. "So this is a success."
