GLACE BAY - The sister of a former Glace Bay man who was murdered in Ontario describes her brother as a kind, single father who was disabled.

The body of Shawn Yorke, 45, was found in his Kitchener, Ont., home Sunday.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service says he died of a bullet wound.

"I want justice," said the victim's sister, Brenda Dunlop of Glace Bay.

Dunlop, 65, said Yorke was diagnosed with cerebral palsy over a year ago.

"He was crippled, walked with canes," she said.

"That's why I can't understand why someone would shoot him. If they had just knocked him down he wouldn't have been able to get back up."

Dunlop said her brother would always be smiling and was generous.

"He had so many friends, he was a kind man."

Waterloo police responded to a 911 call at 150 Elm Ridge Dr. at 1:20 a.m. and located the body of Yorke inside.

Police say they believe the he was targeted and are continuing to canvass the area and search for clues.

Dunlop said her brother's body was found by his 15-year-old son Jacob, who lived with him. Yorke was shot in the torso, she said.

Dunlop said it's a devastating ordeal for Jacob, who is currently with his mother who lives in the same area.

"It's something he's going to carry the rest of his life."

Yorke lived in Kitchener - where he worked for a steel company - for more than 15 years.

Dunlop said her parents, the late Laura Yorke and the late Francis Yorke, him as a foster child when he was two months old.

"She went to Halifax and picked him up," she said.

"He was brought home in a little blue bunny suit."

Doctors had said at the time of his birth that Yorke would be disabled.

"At the time they couldn't give us a name for it but they said he wouldn't be able to walk or talk or do anything in his life."

However, Dunlop said through the love, determination and work of her mother, he learned to walk and talk, and by the time he was five years old he was in school.

"He went all through school and graduated from Glace Bay High School," she said.

Yorke retired more than a year ago after he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, although Dunlop said he didn't let it bother him.

"Shawn was just this big teddy bear, he just loved life."

Dunlop said they were at a campground on the mainland for a family reunion on July 8 when they got the news. Dunlop's daughter was staying in a nearby hotel when she received a message from Yorke's son.

"If they had said he had a heart attack I would have been able to accept it, but I can't accept this. I don't think you'd find anyone who had a bad word to speak about him."

Yorke intended to attend the family reunion but wasn't able to make it, she said.

Sitting on the deck at her home in Glace Bay, Dunlop said Yorke sat there 21 months ago when he was last home after another brother died.

Dunlop said her son and another brother also live in Kitchener.

"My brother is the one doing all the connecting with the police and passing the information to me."

Dunlop said they family is upset over rumours circulating that a bunch of teenagers lived in Yorke's house and there were bikes and pizza boxes through the yard.

"Shawn lived alone with his son. I have a 15-year-old grandson - there's always some of his friends hanging around with him."

"Shawn was a very clean man. I find these things begin put out there very upsetting."

Dunlop said the family is working on funeral arrangements. Although there will be a service in Waterloo, there will be one in Glace Bay too.

"I want a service here too so he will be with our mother and brothers, for everyone to be rejoined together."

Meanwhile, comments throughout social media and the community suggest Yorke was well-known and well-liked.

"He was nice to everyone, had those qualities in a friend you wanted," said James MacDonald of Glace Bay.

MacDonald said he was a few years behind Yorke in school but they were friends.

"Everyone is sad by the news," he said.

"It's hard to talk about. He was a good guy."
