Goat Day is back!

September 12, 2019 StaffLeave a Comment on Goat Day is back!

by Teresa Eubanks, Journal Editor

Hurricane Michael may have shut it down last year but the people behind Goat Day -- the Blountstown Rotary Club -- have big plans for its return next month.

Traditionally held the third Saturday in October, Goat Day offers the perfect opportunity for some early holiday shopping on a cool Fall day. Church groups and community organizations can raise funds by setting up food booths and creative folks can sell their wares from their own tables along the walking track.

The event draws crowds from outside the area, showcasing Calhoun County while bringing visitors to Sam Atkins Park and the historic Panhandle Pioneer Settlement.

"Rotarians are working hard to make this the best one ever," said the club's Vice-President Carla Peacock. "The 33rd Annual Goat Day festival will be held on Oct. 19 at Sam Atkins Park in Blountstown."

Goat Day was started in 1986 by Willard and Linda Smith as they worked to promote the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement.

"Today, the event is one of the largest and best-known festivals in the region, and continues to partner with the Settlement's Pioneer Day held at the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement on the same day," she said.

There will be goats, a goat show, arts, crafts, free attractions, face painting, great live entertainment, and free games for kids! Parking is free and handicap parking is available.

Admission is $5 per person with children under the age of 2 admitted free. Proceeds go to fund scholarships for four Calhoun County students each year.

They include two $4,000 Rotary Scholarships, one for a BHS student and other for an Altha student. There are also two $1,000 scholarships, one in honor of the late Margie Mason and the other named for Dr. Snyder.
