Bend hemp store owner troubled by new OLCC hemp rules

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Changes to OLCC regulations on hemp products sold in Oregon go into effect a week from Friday, but one Central Oregon hemp grower says the new rules might cause more consumer confusion.

J.T. Taylor, the owner of Bend's Strictly CBD and Redmond's Apex Superfoods, is a little confused by the new hemp laws.

"We're deciphering and interpreting the rules as they're being released to us," he told NewsChannel 21 on Wednesday.

Taylor said the new laws, which will limit the total allowance of THC in hemp products to 20 milligrams, could lead to hemp products that cause intoxication being on the market.

"So now we're allowing intoxication into foods and calling it hemp," Taylor said.

He says products could be marketed as hemp, which federally can have no more than 0.3 percent THC, but actually can cause intoxication.

"You're going to be able to see packages of, you know, 10 gummies, with 2 milligrams of THC in each gummy," Taylor said.

However, OLCC Alcohol and Bottle Bill spokesperson Bryant Haley wants to clear up some of the confusion.

"We are taking a step forward on this, to make sure that there are defined values for these products with those limits that are coming in," Haley said.

Haley says the new laws are being put in place to further control THC.

"That's part of what legalization for cannabis overall. The goal is to bring the market above-board, make sure the consumers are knowing what they're getting," Haley said.

Taylor would still like to see a finer line drawn between hemp and marijuana, which contains higher THC levels.

"I believe hemp should be kept as an agricultural product, because that's exactly what it is," he said.

I don't know how any of these folks stay in business with the state constantly changing the goal line. They just lowered the allowable amount of THC a couple years ago totally screwing many hemp farmers and now they are saying that all that crop that went to waste 2 years ago would be marketable now. This is what happens when the government over regulates a natural product.

Could really create an issue for those of us who have to be able to pass a random drug test for work. This kind of stuff is why we tried to get it through the legislature that before these beaurcracies could change their rules the legislature would have to vote on them -- was that in the 80's?

You are absolutely right. It is an issue, but then again, so is the invasion of privacy when peeing in a cup for someone else. With nobody wanting to work in the first place, I'm surprised anyone dares to pee test anyone anymore! An employer doesn't need a peepee test to decide whether or not to keep someone on the job. For most of us critical thinkers, it's pretty easy to tell the dirtbags from the straight arrows at the interview or within the first two weeks of work (then again some folks are dumb enough think Trump is the messiah.. so...). Funny thing is, pot is not a factor in someones ability to to an exceptional job in any industry, so why test for it at all?I know people in many industries including military, incident command, law enforcement, healthcare, public education, and commercial aviation, who excell at their position and let you all in on a little secret- very few people know that they use pot daily. If you're going to test people in today's society, test for opiods and meth, not pot. To those employers and insurance companies who disagree: You might actually get that employee you've always dreamed of if you just broaden your horizons get over the taboo bias against hemp & pot. Some of my most cordial, hardworking, and safety concious employees/bosses were, yes- daily users of marijuana. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Employers will ignore drug test results a lot of the time, especially if you're essential personnel that they have a hard time hiring. Not sure if it's common practice, but I know from personal experience that branches of the federal government have ignored positive cannabis results altogether.

Agricultural Hemp should only be Industrial products, or nutritional products.

It is incredible fiber and wonderful omega 3.

The whole CBD loophole has only confused the average person.

CBD is the compound that causes the paranoia.
