By Steve Cordle

Several years ago I was listening to the radio and heard the personal account of a man named Mark Bowman, a missionary, tell of his work in Cambodia. Mr. Bowman spoke of his work in that nation, which included visiting in a prison. One day as he left, the prisoners told him how lucky he was to be able to leave and have his freedom, while they had to remain behind in the jail to serve their sentences.

As he left the prison and got further down the road, Mark looked back at the prison grounds and something occurred to him: The prison had NO bars, fences or any strong security devices to hold the people in the jail! Those people could walk out at any time they wanted, but in their minds these people were trapped and could go nowhere. The incarceration they were experiencing was mental more than physical.

How many times do we mentally incarcerate ourselves? How often do we say "I can't do _______________________ (you fill in the blank)"and the only reason is because we have a self imposed limit. That's when we must rely on God's power Paul told the Philippians"I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me."We can have the ability to work for God if we will put the effort into it. If we put ourselves in God's will and seek His ways, we will succeed at what we try in life, but we must step out in faith and breakout ofthe doubt that paralyzes us. Will you step out and trust God?

Steve Cordle serves as minister at the Lamar Church of Christ.
