Sirs & Ladies of the Lamar Ledger,

Thank you very much for your very informative January 20, 2010 issue of the Ledger. I was quite disappointed, however, that you began the review of the Past Citizens of the Year in 1977. Our Father, Giles Strong, shared the Citizen of the Year in 1976 at the age of 84 with Dr. Locke. Giles Strong came to Lamar on a motorcycle from Illinois, selling stereoscopic views in 1917, heard about the Homestead Act, and filed for one, but WWI came along and so he joined the Navy and decoded German messages in Washington D.C. until the end of the war. He married my mother and they moved to Colorado and proved out their homestead while he taught school on the prairie south of Lamar. He moved to town and worked at the post office delivering mail south to his many friends and neighbors still on their homesteads. He was a Lt. in the Lamar National Guard. When WWII came along he was a Major in charge of a German Prisoner of War camp in Concordia, Kansas. After the war he continued at the post office until retirement. When he retired, he went on missions to help build orphanages in the Dakotas, missions in Mexico, etc. He was an elder in the First Christian Church and always a very strong supporter of the City of Lamar. He still has family and many friends here in Lamar. His plaque telling of his 1976 Citizen of the Year Award hangs on my "Wall of Fame" here in Lamar.

Thanks,

Virginia Strong Inman
