Watch Now

A former Bureau of Land Management fire officer who last year allegedly turned a mansion into a drug house while the owners were away is now accused of leading police on a midnight chase through Eagle Point with drugs in his car.

Allen Dale Mitchell, 54, refused to stop for sheriff's deputies just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, after the deputies saw him driving in excess of 100 mph on Highway 62 near Shasta Avenue, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office alleged.

Two passengers with him in a white Infiniti G35 sports sedan reportedly told police they feared for their life, with one saying she "thought they were going to die," according to court documents filed by sheriff's deputies.

Police chased the Infiniti through Eagle Point until it stopped at the gate of a residence near the 3000 block of Butte Falls Highway, court documents say. Mitchell allegedly attempted to flee on foot, but was taken into custody after he slipped and fell.

Police found 3 grams of heroin and a digital scale beneath the driver's seat, five grams of methamphetamine inside the glove box and 15 pounds of marijuana located inside the trunk, court documents allege.

Mitchell allegedly told police that the car was "not his, but not stolen," according to the documents.

Mitchell was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on felony charges of attempting to elude police, unlawful possession and delivery of heroin and methamphetamine, plus misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest and reckless driving. He remained in the Jackson County Jail Tuesday evening on $100,000 bail, set by Jackson County Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia.

The incident is Mitchell's seventh pending felony case in a string of charges dating back to early 2017, according to court records.

Mitchell had worked as the BLM's Medford district fire staff officer until his retirement in early 2016. In April 2017, he was arrested on felony burglary and criminal mischief charges alleging he and others took over an east Medford mansion and turned it into a "tweaker flophouse" for two weeks while the owners were out of town, police allege.

Mitchell separately has pending Jackson County charges of first- and second-degree robbery in which he allegedly punched a woman multiple times, pulled off her clothes and took $150 from her bra last August while claiming she had stolen drugs from him.

In other cases, Mitchell is accused of stealing horse saddles, tools and chainsaws from a property in rural Central Point and of aiding in the theft of a quad from property in rural Ashland.
