Family fishes package containing 44 pounds of cocaine from ocean

A family visiting South Carolina fished a big package of cocaine out of the ocean.

Wednesday, October 9th 2019, 3:17 PM EDT

FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- A family visiting South Carolina fished a big package out of the ocean. Inside, they found about 44 pounds of cocaine.

The family was walking along Fripp Island when they spotted a trash bag-wrapped package floating in the water, according to Beaufort County Sheriff's Maj. Bob Bromage.

They dragged it onto the beach and lugged it to their rental home in a golf cart, the AP reports.

When they sliced it open later, they discovered bricks of white powder and decided to contact law enforcement.

The cocaine is valued at more than $600,000. Officials are working to figure out where it came from.

Bromage said narcotics don't frequently wash up in the county. He thinks Hurricane Dorian may have pushed it ashore.
