UI sees applications from Chinese students surge after last year's slump

CHAMPAIGN -- After a well-publicized drop in Chinese student enrollment at the University of Illinois last fall, applications hit a new record for the coming school year despite travel warnings from the Chinese government and talk of tighter restrictions on U.S. visas.

The baseball he used to finish his no-hitter against Wisconsin in 1961 will soon have company in a cabinet at former Illini great DOUG MILLS' home in Peoria.

The 79-year-old recorded his first hole-in-one last Tuesday, acing No. 3 at the Champaign Country Club. The pro shop will return the golf ball as part of a plaque in the coming days.

Urbana alderman on mend after hitting van during bicycle race

URBANA -- Urbana alderman Bill Brown is on the mend after being injured in a recent bicycle race near Charleston.

Brown, 60, was cycling southbound on County Road 1000 E just before 9 a.m. June 1 when he crashed into the side of a van. He was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he spent two nights after it was determined he had fractured six ribs, a collarbone and a thumb.

Champaign church damaged by fire set to hold services at original sanctuary

CHAMPAIGN -- A church heavily damaged by fire in January will be back to holding worship at its home base next month.

Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church said on Facebook that its first Sunday service at 808 E. Bradley Ave. since the fire is set for 10:30 a.m. July 7.

UPDATE: Rantoul woman found safe

RANTOUL -- A missing 87-year-old Rantoul woman was found Tuesday morning -- 19 hours after she was last seen.

Lela M. O'Brien, a resident of Eagle's View Supportive Living and Memory Care, was found at 8:30 a.m. on the third floor of the building. She was last seen in the lobby of the building at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Rantoul man accused of trying to take money from register at Urbana restaurant

URBANA -- A Rantoul man is facing charges after allegedly trying to take money from a cash register at a fast-food restaurant.

Ivory Bobo, 57, who listed an address in the 500 block of Eden Park Drive, was arrested Saturday on charges of robbery and aggravated robbery.

Champaign man charged after cocaine, pot found in search of home

URBANA -- A Champaign man is being held at the Champaign County Jail after police said they found him with suspected drugs and drug-packaging materials.

Kevin Antoineo Henry, 30, who listed an address in the 1700 block of Valley Road was charged Friday with one count of felony manufacture or delivery of cocaine and one count of felony possession of a controlled substance.
