BCSO: Reported gang leader sought on drug charges

Cruz Cardell Whitsett, 30, has a pending warrant for his arrest after the July 10 search of a Helen Avenue home.

PANAMA CITY -- A convict previously at the center of an unsolved 2014 contract killing again is wanted by law enforcement after a search warrant at his home yielded two arrests and more than half a pound of methamphetamine, according to official reports.

Cruz Cardell Whitsett, 30, has a pending warrant for his arrest after the July 10 search executed by the Bay County Sheriff's Office. Almisha Kelana Whitsett, 42, and Brandon Williams, 36, were inside the house and arrested at the time on charges of trafficking methamphetamine, trafficking cocaine and possession of paraphernalia. Cruz Whitsett, who is wanted on the same charges, was out on bond for two previous drug possession and drug trafficking charges. He also was a key witness in an unsolved 2014 contract killing.

According to BCSO reports, investigators arrived about 4 p.m. July 10 with a search warrant to the house in the 600 block of Helen Avenue. Officers reported finding more than half a pound of methamphetamine and about 3 ounces of powder cocaine in the master bedroom closet.

“Each one of the controlled substances were wrapped in plastic baggies which is used to store the controlled substance prior to sale,” officers wrote. “Also located in the kitchen was a digital scale with a white substance which when field tested positive gave a positive reaction for cocaine.”

Officers reported monitoring Williams coming and going from the residence several times before serving the warrant while he was there. In addition to the drugs, officers reported finding the identification of Cruz and Almisha Whitsett inside. BCSO also noted the house was within 100 feet of Everett Middle School.

Williams remains in custody, while Almisha Whitsett has posted bond. Authorities continue to seek Cruz Whitsett in connection with the incident.

Cruz Whitsett had been a key witness in the unsolved contract killing of 29-year-old Cagney Benson, which authorities believe had to go through Whitsett for approval.

Benson, who had been in and out of prison, was found shot once in the face and once behind the ear about 6:30 a.m. Dec. 18, 2014, in a 2009 Chevy Cobalt. The car was parked and not running at an intersection in the Maharaj Mobile Home Park, 518 Everett Ave.

The night before Benson was found dead, he and two other men robbed a man named Fredricus White outside of Bambi's Dollhouse for his jewelry, cell phone, money and drugs. One witness told investigators that Benson put a gun to White's head and threatened to kill him, but one of the two other assailants stopped him, investigators reported.

Whitsett, who was in prison at the time for cocaine-related charges, confirmed that Benson, also known as “Jitt,” and two men had robbed White the night before the shooting. Whitsett went on to tell investigators that White enlisted his uncle, Omar Redmon, to carry out the hit. He quoted White as saying it cost about $6,000, and Redmon followed Benson around that night to a gas station and then to Bambi's on U.S. Business 98. The two then rode together to the trailer park, Whitsett said, where authorities would find Benson's body in a running car.

“Omar asked him, ‘Well, you know anybody wanna buy a gun,' pulled the gun out and shot him,” Whitsett told authorities.

BCSO developed the theory that Whitsett allegedly had a conversation with White after the robbery, and Whitsett -- the man authorities said is the leader of the Gangster Disciples -- approved the hit.

The case fell apart, though, after one witness fell off the radar and Whitsett refused to cooperated. Neither White nor Redmon ever was formally charged in connection with Benson's death. Redmon never was arrested on murder charges, and the principal to commit murder charge against White was dropped because of insufficient evidence.

The case remains open.
