Jarrid Wilson died by suicide Monday, Sept. 9, Pastor Greg Laurie announced. (Courtesy of Harvest Christian Fellowship)

Jarrid Wilson, an associate pastor at Harvest Christian Fellowship Church in Riverside who led a mental health ministry, died Monday, Sept. 9, Pastor Greg Laurie announced Tuesday.

He took his own life, Laurie said.

Wilson had been an associate pastor at the Riverside megachurch for 18 months, Laurie wrote in a memoriam.

"Jarrid loved the Lord and had a servant's heart," Laurie wrote. "He was vibrant, positive, and was always serving and helping others."

Wilson was also open about his depression, Laurie said. Wilson and his wife, Juli, founded an outreach to help people dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts called Anthem of Hope.

Monday afternoon -- the day before Suicide Awareness Day -- Wilson wrote on Twitter that loving Jesus doesn't always cure suicidal thoughts or depression.

"But that doesn't mean Jesus doesn't offer us companionship and comfort," Wilson wrote. "He ALWAYS does that."

Loving Jesus doesn't always cure suicidal thoughts.

Loving Jesus doesn't always cure depression.

Loving Jesus doesn't always cure PTSD.

Loving Jesus doesn't always cure anxiety.

But that doesn't mean Jesus doesn't offer us companionship and comfort.

He ALWAYS does that.

- Jarrid Wilson (@JarridWilson) September 9, 2019

His death comes about one year after Chino's Inland Hills Church Lead Pastor Andrew Stoecklein died of suicide. Stoecklein had also been open about his struggles with depression and anxiety, talking about them in a sermon shortly before his August 2018 death.

Laurie encouraged anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts to reach out for help.

"Sometimes people may think that as pastors or spiritual leaders we are somehow above the pain and struggles of everyday people. We are the ones who are supposed to have all the answers. But we do not," Laurie said.

"At the end of the day, pastors are just people who need to reach out to God for His help and strength, each and every day," he added.

In 2018, Wilson wrote that he had struggled with severe depression throughout his life and had contemplated suicide multiple times.

"As terrible as it sounds, mental health issues can lead many people to do things they wouldn't otherwise do if they didn't struggle," he wrote. "If you don't believe me, I'd encourage you to get to know someone with PTSD, Alzheimer's, or OCD so that you can better understand where I'm coming from."

Wilson is survived by his wife, Juli, his two sons, Finch and Denham, his mother, father, and siblings, according to Laurie.

Funeral details were still being worked out Wednesday, said Bryan St. Peters, a Harvest spokesman.

Those considering suicide or who know someone considering it are encouraged to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 800-273-8255, or visit SuicidePreventionLifeline.org.
