In early July, a woman who took her husband to the Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley returned to her hoodless car to find that the battery had been stolen.

She asked the deputies stationed at the hospital to take a report.

What she received was much more than paperwork.

Besides taking a crime report, the deputies pooled their money, purchased the battery and installed it.Left to right, Riverside County Sheriff's deputies Michael Buelna and Norman Cenizal install a car battery for a woman whose battery was stolen out of her car at Riverside University Health System in Moreno Valley. One of the deputies, Manolo Milian, told the woman that he could review security video for leads in the crime but initially said there wasn't anything he could do about the battery. But then he noticed the couple had a lot of belongings piled in their car.

"They touched our heart a little bit, the circumstances," Milian said in an interview. "We knew she and her husband were probably living out of her car."

Milian and Deputy Norman Cenizal then spoke to their partners -- deputies Michael Buelna and Dartanan Scott and Cpl. Ole Williams -- and they agreed to buy a battery for the couple.

"I don't think she believed we were going to get her a battery. She kind of was in shock," Milian said.

Cenizal installed the battery himself.

Milian said he was proud of his group, which he described as a good and tight unit.

"I personally felt good about it. We solved her issue. It doesn't matter if it's out of our pocket. She was going through a lot, and I think we actually did something for the community and someone. It gives a positive light of law enforcement," Milian said.
