Ben Drake, a water board president with ties to Temecula Valley Wine Country, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, after battling cancer for years. He was 69.

Drake served on the Rancho California Water District board for 17 years and was board president in 2005, 2013 and 2018.

"Ben could definitely be tough," Rancho Water spokeswoman Meggan Valencia said. "He wanted results. I would say he was making sure everybody was doing their job. But then he was just a really nice person that would do anything for you."

Drake also spent time as president of Drake Enterprises, a farm management company that focused on grape and avocado crops in Riverside and San Diego counties. He was previously president of the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association.

Drake lived in the Temecula area for more than 40 years, according to his biography. He and his wife, Sharon Drake, married in 1975 at Rancho Community Church in Temecula.

Drake graduated from Cal State Fresno and enjoyed fly fishing. On his website, Drake said his favorite wine was Zinfandel and described "life's little pleasures" as margaritas and guacamole on a Friday afternoon.
