Build-A-Bear, responding to enormous crowds lining up for its "pay your age" discount, have urged customers to stay home. (Twitter)

Today's Build-A-Bear Workshop promotion -- the first to offer "furry friends" at a sizable "pay your age" discount -- has proven to be so successful the company has issued an alert for other customers to stay home.

"The response to our Pay Your Age Day event has been overwhelming and unprecedented in our 21-year history, and the safety of our guests and associates is our top priority," the statement read. "The crowds have greatly exceeded our expectations and, per local authorities, U.S. stores cannot accept any additional Guests for this event and are limiting lines due to extreme crowds and safety concerns.

Shoppers across Southern California reported huge lines at Build-A-Bear stores in Brea, Orange and Mission Viejo, Montebello, Torrance, and Northridge. Pictures on Facebook pages showed hundreds of people waiting to get into the stores in mostly empty malls in the early hours of Thursday.

Rachel Wysong drove by the newly opened Build-A-Bear at the Outlets at Orange and said lines were "wrapping all around outside, back to Neiman Marcus." She left, saying it was too hot for her two children.

Vanessa Cervantes Adams was sixth in line at the Brea store where she said hundreds of people were lined up. She and her family got in with no problems, but she said the line swelled as the doors opened.

"It went really well except up until a few minutes before they opened, and all of a sudden there was a lot of people directly behind the lady behind me that hadn't been there just a few minutes ago," Cervantes Adams said. "Super chaotic inside while the kids and adults were picking things out."

Despite the chaos, she said the staff was calm and helpful. "All the employees today were great ... and made the kids feel special while not rushing us through the process."

Build-A-Bear said it would be in touch with its customers. "We understand our affected guests may be disappointed, and we are working to address the situation. We will reach out directly to our valued guests as soon as possible."Build-A-Bear offered a ‘buy your age' promotion on July 12 only to see huge lines form, overwhelming stores across the U.S. (File photo by Mark Eades, Orange County Register/SCNG)

NBC posted photos of packed East Coast malls. On the West Coast, stores were just opening when the company sent out its alert.

The promotion, announced earlier this week, offered any customer who signed up in advance the opportunity to select any "furry friend" in the collection and pay their age in dollars. (Outfits, accessories, music and scents are not included.)

The savings would depend on the age of the customer and the retail price of the stuffed animal. For example, a 4-year-old would pay $4; most of the bears cost $20 to $30 without accessories. The most anyone would pay is $29.

Those who signed up for the deal can follow the company's website, www.buildabear.com, for further news on participation.

Staff writer Linda Zavoral of the Mercury News, a sister newspaper to the Southern California News Group, contributed to this report.
