Billionaire "bond king" Bill Gross, co-founder of investment firm Pimco, has bought an oceanfront home in Laguna beach for just under $36 million.

It appears to be the third-highest price ever paid for a single home in Orange County.

The 5,500-square-foot house is in guard-gated Irvine Cove. Built in 1976, the Spanish hacienda-style residence isn't far from a home that Gross shared with his ex-wife, Sue.

While their 32-year marriage ended in October 2017, their acrimonious court battle has continued to play out in the press.

Bill Gross closed on the house June 21, according to property records. The home once was owned by Bruce Del Mar, the co-developer of the Holter Monitor, a widely used portable device for monitoring heart activity.

Del Mar died in 2014 at age 100. The four-bedroom house became the priciest sale of 2015 when it sold for $23 million.

Earlier this year the home was on the market at $34.999 million. Gross paid even more -- $35.82 million, records show.

The residence is set on a third of an acre, with 123 feet of ocean frontage and its own path to the beach.

A great room with vaulted beam ceilings, fireplace and a bar, a formal dining area, a family room and a remodeled kitchen are among the interior spaces. Before it sold three years ago, a real estate agent representing the house predicted it would be extensively remodeled or rebuilt. However, it appears pretty much the same in some photos accompanying the recent listing.

In their ongoing legal battle, Sue Gross has accused her ex-husband of leaving the house they shared a mess, including damaged art, stained carpets, water damage and foul smells, according to published reports. Bill Gross, 74, was granted a temporary restraining order last year barring Sue Gross, 68, from approaching him or entering properties where he lived or worked, or getting anywhere near his girlfriend.

Gross built a $2 trillion investment house in Newport Beach and earned the title "bond king" on Wall Street. In 2014, he left Pacific Investment Management Co., better known as Pimco, and joined Janus Capital Group Inc., a smaller rival.

Forbes estimates his net worth at $2.5 billion.

The highest home sale in Orange County was $45 million paid for an oceanfront Laguna Beach estate in 2016, Register research shows. The second-highest price was $40 million for a 12.5-acre estate with its own lake in Newport Coast in a deal that closed in 2017.
