Guns and dope for everyone is America's answer

Published June 18, 2017 - 7:48pm

President Donald Trump waves as he walks on the South Lawn upon arrival at the White House in Washington, Sunday, from Camp David in Maryland. Manuel Balce Ceneta AP

Arm everybody. That's one answer to an attack on Republican Congressmen who took fire while passing time at America's pastime. In fact, it's the answer a loud, powerful minority offers up anytime a bad guy shoots at a good guy.

If everybody had a gun, fewer people would get shot. Why is it some of you are too thick to follow that simple logic?

Bullets making extra holes in fine people is one epidemic down south. Opioid zombies is another. So if there is an obvious and irrefutably solution to unwanted gunshots, the same thing would fix the other plague. Right?

More simply, if everybody carrying guns is the answer to gun violence, surely everyone carrying opioids is the answer to the junk scourge.

Cut to the core of the argument and you'll find the reason for rationalization of the guns-for-all lobby into a dope-all-round crowd. Lest accusations follow of favouritism to one side of the great American divide, the no-gunners become, by nature, no-smackers.

The arm-everyone advocates say guns don't shoot people, people shoot people. Catchy. So if the bad guys have a piece, lawabiding 'merkins need one to blow off the nasty dudes' freakin' heads. And, if the kids, the wife, the neighbour, the dog are collateral damage, it's a small price.

The logic is easily extended. Dope doesn't derange people, people on dope are deranged. This isn't said as much as it was when America was Great before. Back then, according to mostly white authorities, crack cocaine was the curse. The solution was the war on drugs, or rather the war on inner cities where crack was the affordable cocaine and where the black people lived.

The war was not extended to the 'burbs and campuses, where powdered coke was the recreational and habitual choice. Mandatory sentences for equivalent amounts of crack versus powder were long-term jail time for the former and go-forth-to-sin-a-tad-less for the latter.

But opioids are everywhere, including the mostly pale 'burbs and the even paler farmland and hill country. The gun and dope lobby will accept that sacrifices need to be made.

The dopers will, sooner or later, drop away and the problem with it. Godfearing folks can go back to takin' the edge off with hooch. After all, even the good Lord himself hit the wine pretty regular.

The "arm 'em and harm 'em" policy has a beautiful symmetry to "smack 'em and whack 'em." When an addict approaches and annoys by asking for money, slip him a Murder 8 (Actiq) or TNT (Percocet) and he goes away. If the dose is right, he never comes back.

Counter-arguments are easy to deflect, i.e., With everyone carrying a gun, junkies will have pieces, too. Fact is, most of 'em have a Saturday night special now but they're either blasted or jonesin,' so getting the drop on 'em is easy. Once again, problem solved.

If break-ins are happening in your neighbourhood, you know its dopers doing the thieving. Just scatter around some Hillbilly Heroin (OxyContin) or Tango and Cash (Fentanyl) and they'll leave the TV and family jewels alone. Make it the latter and they won't be back. You guessed it: problem solved.

What about the other side of the great divide -- the no-guns-except-maybe-for-cops bleeding hearts? They'll have a lesser answer to opioids. Cut off supply and after some shaking, puking and seizing, the problem will die away, so to speak.

Yes, the intractable division in philosophies remains. But now there's a clear winner.

Money trumps or buys votes and the gun lobby has, so far, kept the pansy majority and second amendment enemies at bay with a goodly spread of cash.

In keeping with President Trump's "made in America" fetish, imported opium and derivatives would be replaced by legal local product. Big pharma becomes a wonderful partner for the NRA and doubles or triples the cash flow.

The limp-wrist left doesn't stand a chance against the payola power of perfectly legitimate guns and drugs.

Gun-totin' Americans everywhere and "former" junkies nowhere. Now that's a win-win and America is Great again.
