MONROE - Lane and ramp closings associated with an emergency bridge repair on I-75 have been extended both physically and chronologically.

A problem with beams beneath the northbound I-75 bridge over the River Raisin has closed the right lane and Front Street entrance since late September.

Michigan Department of Transportation officials said at the time that the closings could last until around Thanksgiving if a necessary replacement part had to be fabricated for the repair.

Apparently that has proven to be the case, and now MDOT estimates closings associated with the problem could last well into December.

The work zone also has expanded to include closing the Elm Avenue exit ramp.

Aaron Jenkins, an MDOT spokesman, said the Elm ramp closed in late October so a state contractor making the repair could move onto the work site equipment needed for the repair.

The problem involves a pin-and-hanger assembly that links bridge beams together at an expansion joint.

Corrosion at that joint has caused rust that led to friction between the beams that could cause the linking pin to fail. State officials closed the right lane above the problem spot to reduce vibration from traffic directly overhead.

"Every time a big truck went over that joint, we got that rubbing sound that we just don't like," Matt Chynoweth, MDOT's chief bridge engineer, said after the closing was first announced.

A replacement pin that is longer than the existing one still is being made, Mr. Jenkins said last week. The closed lane and ramps will reopen once it is on site and installed.

Traffic that normally uses the Front entrance or the Elm exit is being detoured to the nearby interchange at Dixie Highway.

The bridge is slated for an $8.4 million overhaul next year during which the bridge's beams, which are made of layered plate steel, will be disassembled one by one, cleaned of rust, bolted back together, and painted.

Officials expect to restrict I-75 to two lanes in each direction, instead of the normal three, during that broader repair.
