The owner of a popular cannabis dispensary in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood was identified Tuesday as the victim shot outside of the business a day earlier that resulted in police fatally shooting a suspect.
Martin Olive, the owner of Vapor Room Dispensary, was shot Tuesday near the dispensary at 79 Ninth St., an employee at the store told the Chronicle. "Martin is stable and recovering and receiving great care at the hospital," the worker who identified themselves as Rose, a manager at the Vapor Room, said.
A friend of Olive's, Jason Grace, said in a GoFundMe post that Olive was shot four times, including in the face and lungs, while standing outside the Vapor Room on Monday. Police on Tuesday said that the victim, now identified as Olive, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Olive is "fighting for his life in the ICU. While he's expected to survive, the road to recovery will be long and challenging," Grace wrote on GoFundMe. "Martin is not just a beloved friend -- he's an irreplaceable part of the Bay Area community. This isn't Martin's first fight to survive -- he survived a brain aneurysm in the past. Clearly the world wants him here, and so do we."
The motive behind the shooting was unclear.
Rose said the incident was not the result of an attempted robbery, saying the suspect did not try to access the store. Rose declined to comment further on the incidents leading up to the shooting.
Police responded to the shooting outside the Vapor Room at about 4:56 p.m. Monday to find paramedics treating Olive, who was rushed to a hospital in an ambulance.
Police found the suspect in a nearby building, where a standoff occurred until police shot and killed the suspect, whose identity was not released. Police have provided no details on the circumstances surrounding the shooting, saying on social media that "additional information will be released as it becomes available."

A LinkedIn profile that appeared to belong to Olive said he has been the executive director of the Vapor Room since March 2003, when he founded it. He describes the company in his profile as "San Francisco's oldest continuously operating cannabis dispensary." Prior to creating the Vapor Room, Olive was an art gallery director in San Francisco and attended Los Angeles Valley College and the Academy of Art University, according to his profile.
The Vapor Room was opened in 2004 after voters passed Proposition 215, which allowed Californians access to cannabis for medical purposes, eight years earlier, according to the company's website. The dispensary now operates as a recreational use dispensary. "Vapor Room was also the first dispensary to offer an on-site smoker's lounge which quickly grew into a unique culture of its own," the company's website said.
In recent months, Olive took to LinkedIn to express the Vapor Room's financial struggles. He said in a post late last year, "We're at a crunch point now where things are looking more dire than they've ever been. ... I've been doing my best and well, it just might not be good enough." Olive said the company was searching for solutions such as credit lines or investors.
The shooting will be investigated by San Francisco agencies including the district attorney's office, police said. Body-worn camera footage is expected to be released by police within the next 10 days.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office did not respond to a request for comment on the suspect's identity.
