San Francisco police officers shot and killed a person Monday afternoon in the city's South of Market neighborhood following a standoff and an initial shooting that left a man severely injured, officials said.
Police said they initially responded to a reported shooting in the area of Mission and Ninth streets, police said, where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. That man, who was not initially identified, was hospitalized with what police described as life-threatening injuries.
The address near the shooting, 79 Ninth St., is the location of Vapor Room dispensary. A Chronicle photographer witnessed blood on a sidewalk and the wounded person being transported from the scene in an ambulance. When reached by the Chronicle Monday evening an employee at the Vapor Room dispensary declined to comment on the shooting.

At the scene, officers were alerted that "a suspect was possibly in a nearby building," officials said in a statement issued early Tuesday morning.
Officials offered little detail in the statement about what happened next, saying only that officers set up a perimeter around the building and utilized hostage negotiators to attempt to coax the suspected shooter out of the building.
"The suspect failed to comply and refused to exit the building," police said in a statement. "During this contact" with the suspect, police shot the person, officials said. It was not clear from the initial police statement who opened fire first, but police said a gun was recovered at the scene. The person who was killed by police was not immediately identified.
After the shooting, officers entered the building and attempted to provide medical aid, but the person died at the scene, police said.

A bevy of San Francisco agencies will investigate the shooting, including officials from the district attorney's office. Police were expected to publicly release officer body-worn camera footage of the incident in the next 10 days.
