Philips Road Maintenance February 19 In West Hendry

(February 17, 2025) -- Please be advised that on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Hendry County's contractor, Pavement Maintenance, LLC, will be conducting road maintenance activities on Phillips Road in LaBelle, FL.

The work consists of priming and sanding portions of the existing roadway which will require the roadway to be temporarily closed from 12 pm -- 2 pm.

Residents should expect possible delays throughout the duration of the work and allow extra time for their commute.

Please note that this schedule is tentative and subject to change. The Hendry County Engineering Department will notify of any changes.

Residents or motorists with any questions or concerns can contact the Hendry County Engineering Department at 863-675-5222.

Cheri Ann Durance Guilty In Drug Case

CLEWISTON, FL. -- Cheri Ann Durance, of Clewiston, has been adjudicated guilty and sentenced to 14 years in prison, for Trafficking in Illegal Drugs, Heroin -- 4 Grams or More. She was also adjudicated guilty of two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Paraphernalia, and Driving While License Suspended (Habitual Revocation). She was also ordered to pay a $50,000 fine for the drug trafficking charge.

Assistant State Attorney Kyle Bermingham prosecuted the case.

On September 9, 2021, the Hendry County Sheriff's Office, responded to a suspicious incident at a home in LaBelle. A resident said a car pulled into her driveway and a man rang her doorbell, saying he needed a water hose.

When law enforcement arrived, they say the car, a red Ford Fusion, was driving on State Road 80. The driver was not following traffic laws, so a traffic stop was conducted.

The woman driving was the defendant, Cheri Durance. There was a man in the passenger seat.

Durance admitted to the Sergeant, that she had drugs in her car. She was detained and a search was done of the car. Inside the defendant's purse, was a large amount and variety of drugs. There were also multiple items identifying the bag as belonging to the defendant including her ID. She also had $1,356 in cash.

A trafficking amount of heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and synthetic cannabis was in her possession. There were also numerous bags containing residue, consistent with baggies used to distribute drugs. The defendant was also driving on a suspended license.

Hundreds of Acres Burning In Port LaBelle Ranchette Pastures

PORT LABELLE, FL. -- Thursday afternoon residents in the Glades County Port LaBelle Ranchettes kept their eyes on a large pasture brush fire at the northern end of Aspen Blvd., along Winchester Ave. and extending west to Frontier Circle.

Land owners were out plowing a fire line and watering down the flames that extended over hundreds of acres in the pastures between the Caloosahatchee River and the Ranchettes.

Homes to the south seemed safe as the fire line kept the flames from spreading across the roadways.

Four Arrested In Connection With Shooting And Fight At Store

TWO LABELLE TEENS AND TWO ADULTS ARRESTED IN SHOOTING INCIDENT

LABELLE, FL. -- During the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 6, 2025, Hendry County Investigators arrested two LaBelle teens involved in the February 5, shooting incident at the Dollar General Store on E Cowboy Way and Collingswood Pkwy

In the afternoon hours of Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Hendry Sheriff's Office received several calls reporting that two males were fighting on the northside of the Dollar General Store, when they heard several gunshots. The caller was able to provide a description of the vehicle that fled the scene and the direction of travel.

Minutes later Hendry County K9 Units located and stopped the vehicle at State Road 80 and Bridge Street. The driver of the vehicle was detained, and a search of the vehicle was conducted.

When Detectives arrived at the shooting scene, they began processing the evidence when two individuals began walking through the crime scene. Both men were given commands to leave the area but refused. Instead, they continued to walk thru the crime scene. When Detectives attempted to arrest one man, later identified as 19-year-old Fernando Vasquez, the second subject, 19-year-old Victor Vasquez grabbed the Detective's wrist while she was attempting to place handcuffs on Fernando Vasquez. The detective was able to free herself and both men were arrested.

Fernando Vasquez was arrested and charged with Obstruction without Violence and is currently being held on $500.00 bond

Victor Vasquez was arrested and charged with Battery on LEO and is being held in the Hendry County Jail on $5,000.00 bond.

HCSO Detectives worked into the early morning hours gathering evidence and interviewing several individuals regarding the shooting incident.

After an intensive investigation, Detectives arrested 17-year-old Domingo Israel Hernandez and 16-year-old Yahir Manuel Santoyo-Gonzalez, both of LaBelle.

Both Hernandez and Santoyo-Gonzalez were arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon without Intent to Kill, Firing a Weapon in Public and Possession of a Firearm under the age of 18. Hernandez and Santoyo-Gonzalez have been ordered to be held at the Department of Juvenile Justice Secure Detention for 21 days.

This remains an active investigation, and more arrests are anticipated.
